I wrote "Starving Artist" for everyone who's ever felt embarrassed to pursue a career in the arts because of the capitalist cultural stigma around artists. If we're broke, we're beneath notice. If we make a lot of money from our art, we're the "out-of-touch Hollywood elite," even if we didn't come from money. Either way, we should stay out of political conversations--why would people who shape cultural understanding and foster human connection through their work have anything valuable to contribute to political discourse? I say, screw that. Art matters. Artists matter. Full stop. -AW​
